PostHeaderIcon Parliamentary Inquiry into Mobile Roaming a Wasted Opportunity

BackChat Mobile slams the Parliamentary report, Phoning Home, Inquiry into International Mobile Roaming, released on 19 March 2009 as offering no solutions to the huge costs of mobile roaming. Australians are found to be paying too much to use their mobile phones overseas, but the Government has missed the opportunity to act to help travelers..

Danny Nathanson, CEO of BackChat Mobile said, "Travellers are being ripped off by the larger telcos with roaming charges. BackChat has shown that you can cut international roaming charges by up to 80%. This report offers absolutely no solutions to help reduce roaming charges". "It is unbelievable" he added "that during the time of inquiry both Telstra and Optus have increased their roaming rates substantially"

He said, "Travellers certainly cannot rely on the government to make any difference to the exorbitant roaming charges. As the report itself noted: "Users of roaming services hoping for costs to fall should not be in any doubt that regulatory action will take time and is likely to only be periodically successful".

In it’s submission to the inquiry, BackChat called for greater transparency in roaming pricing so travelers can make an informed decision. This call was ignored in the final report.

When travelers return home, being knocked out by jetlag is nothing compared to opening their mobile phone bill. In Indonesia, China, Germany etc travelers can pay up to $6 per minute for making a one minute call home.

The inquiry, finalized this week, has stated: “Roaming users wishing to reduce the cost of staying in touch while travelling may wish to consider some of the alternatives to roaming.” These include using hotel phones and BackChat’s GlobalSIM.

BackChat Mobile offers the easiest solution for saving money when traveling.
